Your trek begins at Umbwe Gate, following a steep, narrow trail through pristine rainforest. The air is rich with the scent of earth and the sounds of colobus monkeys and tropical birds. As you ascend sharply, the forest gives way to moss-covered trees and giant ferns. Tonight’s camp—Umbwe Cave Camp—is tucked beneath a canopy of ancient trees on a narrow ridge.
Trekking Insight: This is one of Kilimanjaro’s steepest first days—set a steady, unhurried pace (pole pole) and stay well-hydrated.

Today the landscape transforms into heath and moorland, with giant lobelias and senecios dotting the trail. The ridge narrows and the terrain becomes more rugged as you ascend toward Barranco Valley, eventually arriving at the dramatic Barranco Camp nestled beneath the massive Breach Wall of Kibo.

After breakfast, tackle the iconic Barranco Wall—a thrilling hands-on scramble with rewarding views. The trail then meanders through a glacial valley, crossing a series of ridges and streams before reaching Karanga Camp, perched on a windswept plateau with commanding views of Kibo’s summit.
Trekking Tip: This day includes lots of “ups and downs” despite the short distance. It’s perfect for acclimatization.

The trail to Barafu Camp is dry, stark, and surreal, winding through volcanic terrain under an ever-thinning atmosphere. Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, and the cold wind is a reminder of what lies ahead. Rest and prepare for your midnight summit push, ensuring gear is ready and spirits are high.
Summit Prep: Eat well, drink plenty of water, and try to sleep early. Summit night demands endurance and focus.

Zone: Arctic to Rainforest
At midnight, begin your ascent under a canopy of stars, guided by headlamp and determination. The trail is steep scree, mentally and physically demanding. You’ll reach Stella Point (5,756m) at sunrise, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. After celebrations, descend carefully to Barafu for rest, then continue to Mweka Camp through rapidly changing ecosystems.
Success Tip: Mental stamina is key. Breathe deeply, step steadily, and follow your guide’s lead.

Your final descent leads you back into lush rainforest, alive with birdsong and moisture. At Mweka Gate, you’ll check out and receive your Kilimanjaro certificate. A vehicle will return you to Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned rest and celebration.
